Essentials For A Not So Happy Day

Although it might not feel like it, everyone has bad days; and that is OK. We all go through tough moments so this is a friendly reminder that you are not alone in this. As someone that suffers from anxiety, I have more not so happy days than I would like to admit. So I’ve built up a little arsenal of ways to combat the “scaries”, because it's important to take care of ourselves during these moments and seek help if needed.

Before we get to my personal ways of coping, below are a few strategies to also keep in mind.

  1. Take a break: Sometimes all you need is a few minutes to step away from whatever is causing stress. Go for a walk, grab a snack, or just sit quietly for a few minutes. (I promise you, the world will keep spinning and once you’ve had a moment to collect yourself you can resume the things that need to be done.)

  2. Practice self-care daily: Do something that makes you feel good, whether it's taking a long bath, reading a book, or watching your favorite show. (I love Modern Family)

  3. Talk to someone: Reach out to a friend or family member and talk about what's going on. Sometimes just venting can make you feel better. (We are social creatures and we are meant to be surrounded by our people.)

  4. Get moving: Exercise is a great way to release stress and endorphins can boost your mood. (This one is hard for me, when I’m down the last thing I want to do is get up. So I take it in baby steps.. just ten jumping jacks, just a ten minute walk, just ten minutes of stretching. Breaking any task into smaller pieces usually has a positive result.)

  5. Practice gratitude: Take a few minutes to think about what you're thankful for. Focusing on the positive can help you shift your mindset. (Honestly, this one can be hard for me too. Sometimes I cannot think of one thing to be grateful for. Of course this just isn’t true, however when you’re stuck in the “scaries” it can be difficult to shift your focus to positive thoughts. This is where my personal arsenal comes into play.)

First thing is first… get cozy. I find the best way to do this is to place a soft blanket and pair of socks in the dryer for five to ten minutes. (If you do ten minutes you can get those stretches in) Something about a blanket straight from the dryer just seems to melt all my worries away. If the day is particularly tough I opt for a weighted blanket. These things are no joke, and really do an amazing job of calming me down. They can be a little pricey (I was gifted mine) so consider placing it on your birthday or holiday wish list.

Homemade Chicken Soup

When it comes time to eat, I choose a warm meal. A hearty soup or gooey grill cheese is just what the doctor ordered. Well… maybe the doctor didn’t “order” it but there are tons of benefits to a warm meal. A warm meal is the “easiest way to improve digestion, strengthen immunity, increase energy, regulate elimination and so much more”.

Marble Shower

Take a shower. For me the thought of showering sometimes contributes towards more anxiety! However without a doubt, I always feel ten times better. Especially if a hair wash and shave are included. I approach a shower the same way I approach exercising. Breaking it down into tiny tasks that make the whole process more manageable.

CBD Oil

On an as need base I truly do enjoy CBD as way to relax. I go this route when my mind just wont stop, because it not only relaxes me but also helps provide me clarity. My mind is like a never ending train station, with thoughts coming and going at full speed, but when I take CBD it helps me to look at those thoughts logically. I find it particularly helpful if I’m worried about a dentist or doctors appointment. It’s so easy for me to get caught up in the “what if’s” and CBD almost magically brings those thoughts to a halt.

Always consult with a professional before self treating physical or mental health related matters.

Lastly… Greek Mountain Tea. If nothing I do to cope seems like your cup of tea (Ha) at least try a cup of this one. This is my holy grail and I believe there are magical healing properties to it. In ancient times, the herb was used to heal wounds caused by iron weapons during battles. It is caffeine free, and often used in winter to help the immune and respiratory system fight off colds and the flu. There are also current studies being conducted to see how it can be used to combat Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Benefits aside, it tastes amazing and is known to relieve mild anxiety and assist with sleep. Don’t be afraid to try different tea combinations. Sometimes I add honey, hibiscus flowers, and maca root to the brew for a fun daytime drink our whole house loves. Personally my favorite way to enjoy the tea, is freshly brewed by itself about 45 min before bed.

What are your must have’s for a a not so happy day?
