The Importance of Finding a Quality Hair Dresser

Hair Styled at KMH Salon

Your hair is a big part of your personal style, and finding a good hair dresser can make all the difference.

I’ll never forget when I walked into my hair dresser of 12 years now for the first time. I was 18, scared that anyone who would touch my hair would chop it; oh and I also had no idea how to manage my hair! Being of latin decent I have very curly, coarse, thick, unruly hair. It is either a beautiful dream or a frizzy nightmare.

From the first encounter I would love to say she told me my hair was perfect and all it needed was a trim. However, I got something better. She gave me the truth, my hair needed a major cut and I needed to start doing certain things to care for my hair properly if I wanted to maintain its length. Everything she said, although not sugar coated was said gently and with compassion. She understood how hard it was for me to cut my hair, helping me to understand why it was important.

While she was washing my hair, and I’m sure I was shaking with fear, she chatted lightly and spoke about how connecting with a stylist can be a lot to take in. ‘Who else encloses on your personal space while also reaching their hands directly into your hair upon first meeting?” she asked.

Our hair can mean so much to us, and for some like myself it’s part of our identity, playing a big role in how we see ourselves. It reminds me of where I come from. There is saying “hair is the crown you wear”. However the benefits go beyond just appearances, because oddly enough with having well maintained hair and becoming confident in myself I have ultimately become less attached to my hair.

A great hair dresser can also be a trusted advisor, offering tips and guidance on everything from hair maintenance, to relationship advice, to honestly just being your hype person. There will also be moments when they will be there to give you the hard truth in regards to everything from your hair to the stories you have confided in them.

Over the years my stylist has seen me through boyfriends, moves, and jobs. She has always reserved a spot for me, even when in my 20’s I could not afford to come as frequently as needed. She was there on my wedding day not just to style my hair but to attend my nuptials. She knew when I purchased my first home, and joined me for a milestone birthday.

No matter how my day is going or what is going on in my life, when I walk into the salon I feel all the tension melt away. It’s not just my stylist but the entire team who gathers to chat and catch up. It really feels like visiting with family. Don’t get me wrong, you definitely don’t have to be friends with your hair dresser but it’s amazing if that friendship is able to form.

In a world where we often feel disconnected these types of relationships remind us that we are not alone.
